Penalty shootout: Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) scored!
120' +1
PENALTIES WILL DECIDE IT!
120'
There will be one more minute - though it's merely a formality as penalties beckon in Marseille.
118'
Get set for penalties, folks. At the risk of jumping the gun, there doesn't appear to be a sting in the tale at the end of extra-time, with just two minutes remaining before the cruel mistress that is spot-kicks.
Minute
Description
116'
Pepe takes charge! Someone's not doing their job for Portugal at the back as Blaszczykowski's cross proves a real menace, with both Milik and Lewandowski attacking it and Pepe alone to deal with it - but he does just that, keeping his focus and producing a fine headed clearance.
114'
Kapustka locks himself into an entertaining duel with Cedric on the flank, taking on the defender with confidence, but he's forced into too tight of an angle as he can't create much with his cross in the end. Cedric has been absolutely magnificent since his early error.
112'
Portugal break on a tidy counter, with Ronaldo doing well to open up space for Eliseu on the flank, but the full-back's delivery is put behind for a corner. The subsequent cross is dealt with by Milik, who shows good awareness to try and burst on the counter, winning his side a free-kick as he's promptly dragged to ground.
110'
Again the pace of the match slows, as it's being played at a near stand-still now. Both sides appear content trying their luck in the shootout, and they're not showing much reason to believe they can change the direction of this match should they want to anyhow.
108'
Poland showing some initiative here to try and break this deadlock, as they commit their full-backs forward. Piszczek does well to win a corner which Milik takes, but Portugal clear their lines. Fernando Santos' side have been exceptional tonight in the air.
106'
The final 15 minutes are underway!
105'
HALF-TIME IN EXTRA-TIME!
104'
Lewandowski is orchestrating Poland's fight to get back into this game. The striker went to sleep a bit in the second half but he's back with a vengeance and looking very determined atop an otherwise tiring Polish attack.
102'
TERRIFIC DELIVERY! Poland have managed to break out from their prolonged spell in defence and get forward for the first time in extra-time. Lewandowski sends a brilliant ball across the face of goal, along the top of the six-yard box, just begging to be turned in, but no one is there to get on the end of it!
100'
Portugal are dominating possession in this first half of extra-time, asking all the questions as Poland remained hemmed back in their end. This is a bit of a sticky spell for Nawalka's side who need to do a much better job in passing out from the back to provide their defence with a bit of respite.
98'
T. Jodłowiec enters the game and replaces K. Mączyński.
Poland's second change sees Tomasz Jodlowiec replace Maczynski.
96'
Danilo Pereira enters the game and replaces William Carvalho.
William will not play again at the tournament unless Portugal reach the final, as he's replaced here in extra-time by Danilo with their third and final substitution.
95'
STAT: Portugal are unbeaten in their 11 competitive fixtures under Fernando Santos (W8, D3), all eight of their wins in that run being decided by a single goal, including the extra-time win over Croatia.
93'
PAZDAN SLIPS! Eliseu's ball into the area proves an inviting one, and Pazdan's slip sees it get through for Ronaldo, but he's caught off guard by the error as he can't sort his footing to take the chance! It's been a frustrating night for the Real Madrid forward.
91'
Back underway in Marseille!
90' +3
Get ready for another 30 minutes!
90' +2
William Carvalho gets yellow.
William tugs the back of the shirt of Krychowiak, needlessly, and he's booked as a result. That means he will be suspended for the semi-final should Portugal progress.
90' +1
There will be just three minutes added on at the end of this half, and the players seem to be conserving their energy ahead of the lingering extra-time, as 60 seconds of them are already in the book.
89'
B. Kapustka gets yellow.
Good refereeing here from Brych who, following a break in play, goes back to book Kapustka for an earlier foul on Nani.
88'
Well surely we're headed for extra-time now. There won't be much time added on at the end of this second half, and with nothing to separate the two sides. it's looking like these fans in attendance will be treated to some bonus action. The tempo has slowed drastically with neither side wanting to make a mistake that could end their title hopes.
86'
HE'S DONE IT AGAIN! Ronaldo kicks out at the air again, squandering the best chance of this second half as he was played clean through behind the defence by an exquisite ball over the top from Moutinho! He had the goal at his mercy but couldn't make contact, shockingly so!
84'
STAT: Ricardo Quaresma is the most prolific substitute so far at Euro 2016, with one assist (v Hungary) and one goal (v Croatia) after coming off the bench.
82'
B. Kapustka enters the game and replaces K. Grosicki.
DEFLECTED WIDE! Jedrzejczyk makes a crucial intervention to deny Ronaldo a chance, but his slide takes the ball away from Fabianski and just an inch or two wide of the far post! That could have been very costly, but in the end it's a great play by the full-back.
Bartosz Kapustka, back from suspension, replaces Grosicki.
80'
Ricardo Quaresma enters the game and replaces João Mário.
Portugal make their second change, and it's Ricardo Quaresma who enters the fray to a roaring ovation from the supporters as he replaces Joao Mario.
78'
Neither side has been able to take control in this second half, which hasn't lived up to expectations following a brilliant opening 45 minutes. There's been little rhythm or flow with either team in possession and it's made for a rather comfortable half for the two goalkeepers.
76'
Less than 15 minutes to go now and it looks as though another 30 will be needed. Just two matches went to extra-time in the last-16, and it was Portugal and Poland who came out of them victorious. Fatigue has to be an issue given the added minutes they have already played.
74'
João Moutinho enters the game and replaces Adrien Silva.
Fernando Santos goes to his bench for the first time tonight as Joao Moutinho replaces Adrien Silva, who is always a risk on a yellow card. Can the Monaco man provide a bit of inspiration off the bench?
72'
STAT: Poland scored just three goals in their four matches at the tournament coming into tonight, fewer than any other quarter-final team. Only Germany (none) have conceded fewer than the one goal allowed by Adam Nawalka’s side, however.
70'
Adrien Silva gets yellow.
Adrien Silva becomes the first Portugal player booked on the night.
68'
SMART SAVE! Great determination by Milik who busts a gut to get on the end of Grosicki's cross at the near post and redirect an effort at goal, but Patrico sticks a strong paw down to his left to keep it out! A bit more pace on that one from the Ajax striker and he very well has the goal Poland crave.
66'
K. Glik gets yellow.
Glik can't deal with the trickery of Ronaldo, who lured him into a challenge, and the centre-half is booked - though he wasn't on a yellow previously so he will not be suspended should they progress (barring another booking over the last 25 minutes, of course).
64'
HOW'S YOUR LUCK?! Beautifully struck from Cedric, who opts to have a go at goal from 25 yards and he doesn't miss the far corner by much at all! Fabianski was scurrying over in a hurry, certainly not willing to take any chances there.
62'
STAT: Cristiano Ronaldo has played in more games than any other player in the European Championship finals (19). He’s only one goal short of Michel Platini’s record of nine goals in the competition.
60'
DREADFUL! Nothing going right tonight for Ronaldo! They say you make your own luck, but in his case that seems to hold little weight. He does well to delay a run, pulling off his marker to get into space and on the end of Nani's pull-back in the centre, but he completely whiffs on his strike, kicking nothing but air! That was served up brilliantly for him!
58'
Poland are showing no hesitation in sending their full-backs forward on the overlap, but they're struggling to find the desired end product. They're doing well to transition into the final third and get at this Portugal defence, but that's when it's all fizzling out. Perhaps they could use a bit of inspiration off the bench in the form of young wingers Piotr Zielinski or Bartosz Kapustka.
56'
Surprising effort from Ronaldo! The Real Madrid forward makes a real mess of an otherwise great scoring chance after being sprung through into the area by Nani. He has time to take a touch and better his angle, or roll a pass across the six-yard box for Mario, but instead wastes the chance as he sends a poor first-time effort wide of the mark.
54'
It's taking some time for this second half to get up to the standard set by the first. Both teams have produced a few careless moments in possession, disrupting their flow in possession, as it's all a bit too static at the moment. Poland are enjoying more time on the ball, but it's been rather pedestrian nonetheless.
52'
STAT: Portugal have previously played a European Championship knockout stage match at the Stade Velodrome, losing 3-2 to France in the semi-final in 1984.
50'
Strong defensive cover! Cedric has settled in nicely after his rather embarrassing error allowed Poland through to score the opener. The full-back does well come come around the back with cover and pressure Lewandowski, forcing the striker to send a feeble effort towards Patricio from what looked an encouraging position.
48'
The second half doesn't start as rampant as the first, with a rather stale opening few minutes taking place as the two sides take a moment to get their rhythm back in possession.
46'
Here we go again!
45' +1
HALF-TIME: POLAND 1-1 PORTUGAL.
45'
There will be one minute added on at the end of this first half.
44'
Disappointing! Ronaldo tumbles over on the edge of the area, appealing for a free-kick, but again the referee doesn't give him the benefit of the doubt. Portugal manage to keep the pressure on and Nani has a look at goal from atop the box, but he rolls a weak effort straight at Fabianski.
42'
A. Jędrzejczyk gets yellow.
Jedrzejczyk is booked for a cynical and unnecessary foul on Sanches, and he will be suspended for the semi-final should Poland advance tonight.
41'
Portugal are in the midst of an encouraging spell as they keep Poland pinned back in their own end. Santos' side have wonderful width about them in the attacking half, but the likes of Nani and Ronaldo need to offer better movement off the ball in the centre to help open up this Polish back-four.
39'
Back and forth these teams go, exchanging attacks and looking to add to their tally! Poland are awarded a free-kick in an advanced position, but Portugal manage to clear before breaking forward themselves and winning a corner at the end of an enticing cross from Eliseu.
37'
STAT: This is Poland and Portugal’s third encounter at a major tournament and their first in the European Championship. They have one win apiece so far: 1-0 to Poland at the 1986 World Cup and 4-0 to Portugal at the 2002 World Cup.
35'
Well, it's game on now! Parity restored in Marseille and it's shaping up to be a memorable evening! The tempo has been superb from the start and it's showing no signs of slowing. Poland are quick to get back on the front foot and Patricio is forced to come off his line and parry a cross, but makes a mess of it as his defence are put under some pressure before finally clearing their lines!
33'
Renato Sanches has scored a goal for Portugal! Assist by Nani.
HE'S WORTH EVERY PENNY! Delightful link-up play between Renato Sanches and Nani! The former gets on the end of a tidy one-two and rifles a shot in at the near post for his first international goal! It took a slight deflection off Krychowiak to wrong-foot Fabianski, but that's a delightful equaliser nonetheless!
Nani is credited with the assist for his splendid back-heel.
32'
Every cloud has a silver lining, and while Portugal will be infuriated for being denied what they will feel is a sure penalty, they seem to have rallied together behind the adversity. They're starting to impose themselves and get a real foothold in the match.
31'
PENALTY APPEALS DENIED! That's careless play from Pazdan in the area as he recognises he's beaten to a cross, and subsequently shoves Ronaldo to ground from behind. It looks a clear-cut penalty at first glance, but referee Felix Brych says play on! Ronaldo has developed a bit of a reputation, but he has every right to be upset there.
29'
HAS TO BE BETTER! Nani does well to win the ball in an advanced position and tee up Ronaldo. The Real Madrid forward has a clean look at goal from 20 yards, but fires a tame effort just over to Fabianski's right as the keeper makes a simple save. You absolutely expect him to be doing more from that sort of position.
27'
There's no inspiration in this Portugal side at the moment, and that has to be a worry for Fernando Santos. It's either something needs to be tweaked, or there just isn't that much about them, because despite their last-16 win over Croatia, they provided next to no attacking quality to speak of, and that trend has continued into tonight's contest.
25'
Portugal are in serious danger of falling further behind as they struggle mightily to get into any sort of rhythm. They're seeing less and less of the ball, and their unwillingness to press high up the pitch has allowed Poland to keep possession and transition far too easily.
23'
STUNNING PASSING! Poland are looking brighter with each passing minute! A delicious bit of interplay sees them carve apart the Portugal defence, but Grosicki's final ball across the face of goal is cleared by Fonte!
22'
Crucial recovery! Milik and Lewandowski link-up brilliantly again, this time with the Ajax striker on the receiving end. He strides into space and has just Pepe to beat, but the centre-half does enough to keep his position and block a shot behind for a corner!
20'
STAT: This is the only quarter-final tie that doesn’t feature a group winner, but it’s also one of just two (along with France v Iceland) that features a pair of unbeaten teams.
18'
HE'S GOT HIS CONFIDENCE BACK! Milik and Lewandowski have such an incredible understanding atop this Polish attack. They feed off each other so well, and the latter is starting to look very dangerous. Lewandowski gets on the end of a delightful spot from Milik, before fending off a challenge - and likely a foul - by Pepe, before getting a shot off, though it's straight at Patricio in the end.
16'
Poland break! Exciting stuff on the counter from the Poles. Krychowiak, who has earned his reputation as a great ball winner in midfield, steals possession for his side near the halfway line and starts Milik forward. The Ajax striker uses the run of Lewandowski as a decoy before firing an effort inches wide of the far post!
14'
Another corner here for Portugal, this one courtesy of a strong overlapping run from Eliseu. After such a bright start Poland are looking a bit too content with dropping deep in defence, as they invite pressure on their goal. The last thing they want is to hand all the momentum back to Ronaldo and company.
12'
KNOCKED BEHIND! Delightful build-up from Portugal as they start to get their legs under them. Mario sprints forward and has options on the break, but he can't play it out of his feet quick enough to send Ronaldo through on goal. Nonetheless, Cedric is sprung into space on the right, but Pazdan does very well to get back and knock his delivery behind for a corner.
10'
THAT'S MORE LIKE IT! Portugal lacked width in the early going but they're starting to get their full-backs forward, and Cedric manages to carve out a chance on his first time of asking. The defender picks out Ronaldo in the centre with his pull-back, but the forward's effort is blocked, before Mario's follow-up is deflected high into the air and safely into the arms of Fabianski.
8'
STAT: Robert Lewandowski scored in the 17th minute of his first game at Euro 2012 against Greece, and before tonight, he had failed to find the net or deliver an assist in the competition in 643 minutes. The skid ended after 645 minutes with his opener.
6'
Poland continue to be full of running, and they have Portugal chasing shadows in midfield. Nawalka's side are so comfortable in possession, and have the perfect blend of pace, skill and grit in midfield that makes them very difficult to play against. Portugal need to adopt a bit of urgency, even though it's still early.
4'
Portugal have their work cut out for them now! This is a Poland side who have proven to be incredibly stingy in defence, and they have yet to trail in this tournament. It's exactly the sort of start Nawalka was hoping for, while again Portugal are punished for being slow out of the gate.
2'
R. Lewandowski has scored a goal for Poland! Assist by K. Grosicki.
Grosicki was sprinting since the opening kick and he's rewarded with the assist.
THERE'S THE GOAL POLAND HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR! Grosicki gets behind Cedric courtesy of a costly mistake from the full-back, before picking out an admirable pull-back for Lewandowski in the area, and he passes a composed finish back across and in at the near post! He's off the mark at last!
1'
AND WE'RE OFF! Poland get us underway in their all-white strip, attacking right to left, with Portugal in red.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage from the Stade Velodrome in Marseille as Poland and Portugal battle it out to become the first side to book their place in the semi-final!
Poland survived Switzerland in their last-16 clash, narrowly edging them out on penalties to secure their first-ever place in the Euro quarter-finals, and remain unbeaten in this edition of the tournament. Portgual have yet to lose themselves, also requiring more than the allotted 90 minutes to progress to this stage, with Ricardo Quaresma scoring deep in extra-time to see them past Croatia. There's yet to be a defeat between them, so something's got to give tonight in Marseille!
Adam Nawalka names an unchanged XI for the White Eagles, following their victory over Switzerland. Robert Lewandowski recovered in time from a minor knock and continues to lead the line alongside Arek Milik. Bartosz Kapustka returns from suspension, but he's relegated to a spot on the bench as Kamil Grosicki keeps his place in the team.
Fernando Santos makes two changes to his side, having to replace the injured Raphael Guerreiro and Andre Gomes, both of whom are unavailable tonight. Eliseu reassumes his starting spot at left-back, while enigmatic teenage sensation Renato Sanches is brought into midfield after an impressive showing off the bench against Croatia. Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani lead the line again, with Ricardo Quaresma again left on the bench despite his heroics in the last-16.
These two nations sit at opposite ends of the spectrum as far as their history is concerned. Poland, foreign to this stage of the competition, take on a Portugal side so accustom to the quarter-finals it borders on cliché. It’s new versus old in Marseille tonight. Debutantes versus mainstays. Will experience prove vital for Portugal or can Poland capture the magic of the occasion to keep their dreams alive?
The anthems are wonderfully received by this capacity crowd in Marseille, as we get set for kick-off at the Stade Velodrome, but not before a moment of silence to honour the lives tragically lost in Tuesday's terrorist attacks in Istanbul.
Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring inside of two minutes before Renato Sanches' first international goal via a deflection restored parity, as we head into the break on level terms at the end of a wonderfully enthralling first half in Marseille!
Poland were very much on top for the opening half-hour, but they were unable to add to their lead and were made to pay as Portugal got a foothold in the match and were able to pull themselves back into it, before looking capable of taking the lead in the latter stages. These opening 45 minutes have been a joy to behold and it's perfectly poised for the second half at the Stade Velodrome!
Quality petered out in the second half as first-half goals from Lewandowski and Sanches account for all the scoring as Portugal and Poland are headed for their second extra-time match of the knockout stage.
We're left guessing into the final 15 minutes as the first half of extra-time ends how it started. It's a game of fine margins, with so little to separate these two sides, and barring a rare moment of individual brilliance, it's looking as though this match is destined for penalties.
Poland into their second penalty shootout in their history at the European Championships, and second in as many matches, while Portugal have a wide array of experience with spot-kicks. Tension is high in the Stade Velodrome as these players mentally prepare themselves for what is to come!
COOL AS A CUCUMBER! Pressure mounts on Ronaldo, but he sends Fabianski the wrong way to open the shootout with a goal for Portugal.
LEWANDOWSKI REPLIES! The stars have done their part! The Bayern forward passes it into the far corner to pull Poland level.
FANTASTIC COMPOSURE! Outstanding from Milik who put everything behind that penalty and still gets the placement perfect!
WHAT A NIGHT FOR RENATO SANCHES! The teenager converts a thunderous penalty from the spot and Portugal retake the lead!
PORTUGAL REMAIN PERFECT! Moutinho holds his nerve, with his penalty history creeping in the back of his mind, but he makes no mistake to put Portugal 3-2 up!
GLIK DOES HIS PART! The centre-half levels the score with an emphatic penalty! That's everything you could possibly ask for from a centre-back!
HOW COOL WAS THAT?! Nani virtually walks up to this one and essentially chips a calm finish into the top corner!
POLAND ON THE VERGE OF BEING OUSTED! Blaszczykowski looks to the sky in disbelief as Patricio guesses right to keep his effort out! You could weep for him!
PORTGUAL THROUGH TO THE SEMI-FINAL! Quaresma is becoming awfully familiar with the role of hero, as he provides the winner for a second-consecutive match, booking Portugal's place in the last-four!
FULL-TIME: POLAND 1-1 PORTUGAL (3-5 pens). Ricardo Quaresma converts the decisive spot-kick as the Seleccao progress to a fourth semi-final appearance in the last five European Championships, ending the memorable run from Adam Nawalka's side!
It's incredibly harsh on Poland, who did everything they had to in setting themselves up for a semi-final berth, but one mistake from the spot sends them packing after coming inches away from making history in Marseille!
Portugal will have a deserved rest ahead of their semi-final clash where they await the winner of tomorrow's quarter-final between Belgium and Wales.
That's all for our live coverage, thanks for following along! Goodbye!
