We're underway at Old Trafford.
United have found their form in front of goal since the sacking of Jose Mourinho as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has unlocked his side's potential in the final third. Under the Norwegian, the club have won all four of their matches, scoring 14 goals. This includes their 2-0 win over Newcastle United last time out at St James' Park. The Red Devils were beaten finalists last season at the hands of Chelsea, but will be eyeing another strong run in the competition, starting this afternoon.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the FA Cup third-round clash between Manchester United and Reading at Old Trafford.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-3-3): Sergio Romero; Diogo Dalot, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Ashley Young; Fred, Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira; Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez.
SUBS: Victor Lindelof, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Lee Grant, Marouane Fellaini, James Garner, Tahith Chong.
SUBS: Chris Gunter, John O'Shea, Sone Aluko, Modou Barrow, Yakou Meite, Sam Walker, Ryan East.
READING (4-2-3-1): Anssi Jaakkola; Andy Yiadom, Tiago Ilori, Liam Moore, Omar Richards; Liam Kelly, Andy Rinomhota; Garath McCleary, John Swift, Callum Harriott; Danny Loader.
Reading are in deep trouble in the relegation zone in the Championship. Paul Clement was sacked last month, but the change in the dugout has not resulted in an improvement on the pitch. The Royals are without a win in their last 10 matches. Jose Gomes arrived on December 22 to replace Clement, but he has lost three of his four matches, including their 4-1 defeat at the Madejski Stadium to Swansea City during the week.
Manchester United hold a 2-0 lead over Reading at the break in this FA Cup third-round match, although they have been far from their best. The Royals have arguably played the better football, but have lacked the clinical edge needed to find the back of the net. Danny Loader and Callum Harriott have both spurned good openings, while Andy Yiadom was denied by Sergio Romero. At the other end, United took the lead after VAR ruled that Juan Mata had been fouled by Omar Richards, with the Spaniard then scoring from the penalty spot. Romelu Lukaku doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time, putting the Red Devils on the path to the next round.
Jose Gomes will have seen plenty of reasons to be satisfied with his team's performance, but the issue has been in the final third. Loader had a similar chance to Lukaku earlier in the game. Whereas the Belgian held his nerve and found the net, the Reading striker stumbled and failed to register an effort at goal. The Royals have keep their heads in the second half to avoid another heavy defeat that could further damage their confidence.
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
United face Tottenham in the Premier League next week at Wembley Stadium, while the Royals play Nottingham Forest at the Madejski Stadium.
