LATE ATTEMPT! The home fans are angry as they feel Smalling's shot took a deflection on its way over the crossbar. Vidal was fortunate there as he jumped towards Smalling and got nowhere near the ball.
90' +3
Carles Aleñá enters the game and replaces Sergio Busquets.
Alena comes on for Busquets for the final 60 seconds or so.
90' +2
Alena has been waiting to come on for about three or four minutes now but Barcelona are showing no signs of giving the ball away.
90' +1
There is no getting the ball for United as they chase shadows. Barca are seeing out these closing stages with ease, stringing together passes galore.
90'
Three minutes have been added on at the end of this first leg. United are struggling to get hold of the ball at the moment.
89'
Barcelona are starting to play out the game in trademark style by knocking the ball around. The visitors appear to have done enough to take a slender lead into the second leg.
88'
Pereira is constantly being played into space down the left, with McTominay the latest to pick him out with a pass from deep. There is a lack of options in the middle, though, and Barcelona deal with the danger pretty comfortably.
86'
Fred picks out the run of Pereira down the left. It is not the first time United have stretched their opponents today but, yet again, there is nothing to show for it.
85'
C. Smalling gets yellow.
Andreas Pereira enters the game and replaces M. Rashford.
Pereira is on for Rashford in United's final change of the match. Valverde still has one more sub available to use should he wish.
Smalling is the latest player to be booked for putting his arm on Suarez's neck. It sounds worse than it was - that is another strange call from the referee, who did not have to reach into his pocket.
84'
NEARLY! Messi's free-kick goes through the wall. De Gea manages to watch the ball all the way, despite a slight deflection on its way through, to make a routine save down the middle.
Minute
Description
83'
Pogba catches the boot of Semedo on the edge of the box. That is a strange challenge from the United midfielder as he had team-mates alongside him to deal with the danger. Can the visitors further punish him from the free-kick?
81'
It is very patient from United - perhaps too patient. Rashford finally opts to go direct with a clipped cross towards the back post, which Lenglet gets on the end of before winning his side a free-kick. Barca get forward and Lindelof produces a good interception to stop Suarez from racing through on goal.
79'
Messi threads the ball to Roberto down the right. He has all the time in the world to pick out a team-mate, but he is only able to find Shaw in the middle.
78'
It has not exactly been a match packed with chances, but it has remained gripping throughout. A second goal for Barcelona now will surely kill off the tie; one for United and it is very much game on for the second leg. Barca are now down to 67 per cent in terms of possession.
76'
J. Lingard gets yellow.
Lingard, only on the field for two minutes, is booked for going through the back of Vidal. That is a strange decision from the referee - there was minimal contact and Lingard did not leave the ground.
75'
Martial is on the left, Lingard on the right and Rashford through the middle as United go with a 4-3-3. With 15 minutes of the first leg to go, the home side have still failed to register a shot on target.
74'
J. Lingard enters the game and replaces Diogo Dalot.
Solskjaer's second change sees Lingard come on for Dalot in attack.
73'
Roberto offers Semedo an option on the overlap and his cross is deflected behind by Fred. Barca eventually work the ball into the box but it is a simple one for De Gea to deal with. United are about to make another change...
71'
A. Vidal gets yellow.
Vidal needs to calm down. He has only been on the field for six minutes but he has already put in a number of challenges, this latest one on Fred to earn himself a caution.
ALWAYS RISING! Despite the distance, Rashford is not put off and he goes for goal from the free-kick. It is far too straight and has too much power behind it - the ball is nowhere near the target in the end.
70'
This is a poor cross from Young. United have really struggled to carve anything out when they get on the ball in the final third. Pogba is challenged by Vidal about 32 yards from goal and Solskjaer's men have a free-kick.
68'
A. Martial enters the game and replaces R. Lukaku.
Lukaku makes way for Martial as United go for a slight change of approach up top.
66'
Sergi Roberto enters the game and replaces Arthur.
Roberto comes on for Arthur in the second change of the contest.
65'
A. Vidal enters the game and replaces Philippe Coutinho.
Coutinho is replaced by Vidal in the first of Barcelona's changes.
64'
Valverde has seen enough - he is preparing a double change with around half an hour to go. Coutinho turns one way and then goes back on himself, but there is just no space for Barcelona's attacking players. Valverde's men are playing very narrow.
62'
Lenglet, one of many below-par performers from Barcelona today, steps across Rashford to give away a free-kick on the right-hand flank. Young swings it into an area around eight yards from goal, but Alba gets to the ball first.
58'
Suarez pretty much kicks the ball into the hand of Shaw to win his side a free-kick,relieving some of the pressure. Martial has been sent to warm up by Solskjaer.
57'
This game is panning out well for United. Barcelona have not got going at all and the momentum is still on the hosts' side. Fred's shot from range is blasted right into Pique.
56'
What should have been a simple pass for Messi into the feet of Alba is hit out of play. This has been one of the Barcelona forward's poorest games in recent memory.
55'
Semedo gets the better of Dalot but the versatile United wideman recovers to cut out the cross - that has been a great battle down Barcelona's right. The visitors are struggling to beat United's press and you get the sense that an equaliser could be coming.
54'
GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR RASHFORD! Pogba goes down in the box under contact from Busquets, but not enough contact for the referee to point to the spot. United sustain the pressure and the ball drops for Rashford to strike. His shinned strike, after Ter Stegen punched the ball straight to him, is off target.
52'
It has been a very sloppy start to the second half from both sides. Barcelona will happily take a one-goal lead into the second leg, so the onus is on United to score at least once.
51'
Pique gets on the end of the corner. There is another chance to get the ball into the box but McTominay's cross is cut out, seemingly by the hand of Busquets - the referee thinks otherwise.
49'
Pogba plays the ball across to Young on the right. The United skipper goes for an early cross, rather than trying to beat Alba for speed, and he earns his side another corner.
48'
McTominay gets plenty of Arthur and none of the ball. It is a free-kick and nothing else for the visitors.
47'
Ter Stegen, under pressure, sweeps the ball to his left and it is not kept in play. The high pressing from United pays off, but they fail to do much from the throw high up the pitch.
46'
RESTART! United, who failed to register a shot on target in the first half of a Champions League home game for the first time since November 2007 (v Sporting Lisbon), get us back underway at Old Trafford!
45' +2
HALF-TIME: MAN UNITED 0-1 BARCELONA
45'
The visitors enjoy some sustained pressure on the edge of the opposition box. Coutinho does well to slide the ball through for Suarez after Messi, who he was looking to play a one-two with, slipped. Suarez's shot ends wide of the target.
43'
Barcelona have occasionally threatened in this first half, and they did force De Gea into a good save, but United have been the better side since Shaw's own goal. There has been plenty of probing away from the hosts with no real end product so far.
41'
No idea what Dalot was thinking there. He had to be testing Ter Stegen from five or six yards out at the very least! Barcelona could do with the half-time whistle.
40'
BIG CHANCE! United's pressure so nearly tells as Rashford's teasing cross is met by Dalot in the six-yard box. Dalot has a big chunk of the goal to aim for with his header but he instead looks to find a team-mate by heading across goal.
38'
Busquets is a lucky boy, getting away with another yellow card-worthy challenge on Pogba. United's French midfielder needs to keep doing what he is doing by getting at a rattled Busquets at every opportunity. The momentum is with United.
34'
Dalot is enjoying himself down the left up against Semedo. The ball is worked to Pogba but his attempted chipped pass is cut out. United are in complete control of the game, though they have yet to test Ter Stegen with 34 minutes of the match played.
31'
There was no malice from Smalling when catching Messi, but he has left the superstar forward in quite a bad way. There is blood pouring from Messi's nose and he will require some patching up before re-entering the field.
29'
Barcelona are once again sloppy in front of their own box. Lenglet is caught on the ball and Young is given a free cross into the box, which deflects up for Ter Stegen to collect. The visitors, despite their lead, are looking far from their best.
28'
Dalot bursts into the space vacated by Semedo. It is played back to Pogba, who very nearly picks out the head of Lukaku six yards from goal - an inch or two lower and the Belgium striker would have got on the end of it.
24'
Lukaku holds the ball up on the left but he takes the wrong choice by crossing into the box, only succeeding in finding Ter Stegen. United do not look threatening enough in the final third.
23'
SHOT! Rashford uses the decoy run of Dalot to his advantage. Space opens up for the United striker through the middle but his shot from outside the box goes over the bar. That is far better from the hosts' perspective.
21'
United have a chance to counter following a poor free-kick routine from their opponents. Young has the ball out on the right but he goes for an early cross towards Rashford, over-hitting the ball straight out of play. Terrible play all-round there!
19'
L. Shaw gets yellow.
Shaw twice reaches out to stop Messi from getting away from him and he is shown a yellow card that will rule him out of the return match.
18'
Fred takes on the free-kick from 25 yards, sending it straight into the Barcelona wall. Young's hurried shot from the follow-up is well off target.
17'
Sergio Busquets gets yellow.
Pique plays a terrible pass towards Busquets and the midfielder has to drag down Pogba to prevent his opposite number from possibly getting a shot in. Having dodged a booking early on, Busquets now enters the referee's book.
15'
United's gameplan was to hit Barcelona on the counter, playing almost like the away side. It will be interesting to see if those tactics change now that they have fallen behind. Dalot tries to get away down the left but Pique stands his ground and wins back the ball.
13'
That was the correct call from the officials - Suarez was onside when making contact with Messi's cross. Messi's first touch was actually pretty disappointing, but he recovered well enough to effectively set up the opening goal of this tie.
12'
L. Shaw is unfortunate, scores an own goal!
GOOOAAALLL!!! MAN UNITED 0-1 BARCELONA! Messi chips the ball to the back post and Suarez nods it back across goal. The ex-Liverpool striker wheels away to celebrate but the final touch came off Shaw so that will surely be an own goal. Suarez's celebrations are initially cut short as the offside flag went up, but a VAR check shows that he was just about onside.
11'
United are trying to get the ball in behind for Rashford as quickly as possible, with Pogba key to that tactic. Barcelona have had more of the ball so far but there has not been a great deal between the two sides.
9'
Messi's ball is half-decent but Suarez turns his back on it and it sails out of play. The home fans liked that breakdown in communication between Barca's two most threatening players. Up the other end, Rashford chases down a throughball but Ter Stegen gets there first.
7'
Semedo gets forward down the right for the first time today. The ball is worked to Messi on the edge of the box, but he cannot quite work enough space to get the shot in. Alba's cross is then headed down by Lindelof.
6'
SWEETLY STRUCK! Rashford hits the free-kick well but it arrows wide of the Barcelona target. Young then dives in late on Coutinho and, like Busquets a couple of minutes ago, he is lucky to avoid a booking.
5'
McTominay gets to a loose ball just ahead of Busquets, who is perhaps fortunate to escape a booking for his high challenge. The home fans are furious with that decision from the referee, though United do at least have a free-kick in a promising position.
3'
Coutinho's low corner is blocked at the front post for another corner. Barcelona work it short and the ball never makes it as far as the box, meaning a wasted journey forward for Lenglet and Pique.
2'
The visitors have seen a fair bit of the ball in the opening couple of minutes. It is worked to Suarez down the left but he is unable to cut into the box. Alba is also thwarted by Young, though he does at least manage to win his side a corner.

KICK-OFF! Barcelona, unbeaten in 16 matches heading into this first leg, get us underway!
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Champions League quarter-final first leg between Manchester United and Barcelona at Old Trafford.
Two of world football's biggest clubs collide in a repeat of the 2009 and 2011 finals, both of which Barcelona won. The Spanish champions are well on course to retaining their LaLiga title, sitting 11 points better off than Atletico Madrid following Saturday's 2-0 win over their closest challengers. Ernesto Valverde's men cruised to a 5-1 win over Lyon in the last round of the Champions League, getting over the line with an improved second-leg display on home soil after playing out a stalemate in France. If finishing top of their domestic league is now a formality, going all the way on the continent will be a far tougher task.
Man United produced a memorable comeback win against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16, meanwhile, coming out on top 3-1 at the Parc des Princes with a depleted squad after losing the first leg 2-0 here. That performance was partly to thank for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being handed the managerial job on a permanent basis, but things have since gone a little downhill as United have lost three of their last four games in all competitions, most recently tasting a 2-1 defeat at Wolves eight days ago. A much better display is required today if Solskjaer's side are to take a positive result with them to Camp Nou next week.
MAN UNITED (3-5-2): David de Gea; Ashley Young (c), Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof; Diogo Dalot, Fred, Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw; Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku.
Man United subs: Anthony Martial, Andreas Pereira, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata.
BARCELONA (4-3-3): Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Nelson Semedo, Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Jordi Alba; Arthur, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic; Lionel Messi (c), Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho.
Barcelona subs: Samuel Umtiti, Arturo Vidal, Sergi Roberto, Jasper Cillessen, Ousmane Dembele, Malcom, Carles Alena.
The two teams are now out on the field at Old Trafford and we are moments away from kick-off.
Solskjaer would have been concerned by the one-sided nature of the first 10 minutes or so, but United took back some control of the game and they have plenty of reasons to be optimistic ahead of the second half. The bottom line, though, is that the hosts trail 1-0 - an away goal at that - and they have not managed a single shot on target. It is not that unlikely, then, that Solskjaer will turn to his bench at half-time.
United, who have now tasted defeat in four of their last five matches, return to action on Saturday with a home league game against West Ham. Barca's next match, meanwhile, is a trip to Huesca on the same day, before then turning attention to next Tuesday's return leg against United.
Thanks for joining our coverage today. Until next time, goodbye!
